Alle Radici del Design Espanso. Quali futuri per la Storia del Design? raccoglie gli atti del VI Convegno dell’Associazione Italiana Storici del Design (AIS/Design), svoltosi al Politecnico di Milano il 24 e 25 novembre 2023. A cura di Letizia Bollini, Giampiero Bosoni, Marinella Ferrara, Francesco E. Guida e Chiara Lecce, il volume rappresenta una riflessione interdisciplinare e di livello internazionale sul concetto di “Design Espanso” e sulle sue implicazioni per la storiografia del design contemporaneo.
Il libro si articola attorno a due principali linee di ricerca: le “Nuove Storie”, che propongono approcci critici e metodologici alternativi alla narrazione storica tradizionale, e “La Didattica della Storia del Design”, che analizza pratiche e strumenti per l’insegnamento della disciplina in una prospettiva aggiornata e inclusiva.
Completano il volume i contributi della sessione speciale dedicata a Vanni Pasca, fondatore di AIS/Design, e la pubblicazione delle tre tesi vincitrici della prima edizione del Premio Vanni Pasca, a lui intitolato.
Edito in formato bilingue italiano/inglese, il volume intende favorire un confronto internazionale e pluralistico, ponendosi come strumento di riferimento per studiosi, docenti, studenti e professionisti interessati all’evoluzione e al futuro della storia del design.

Letizia Bollini, MSc in Architecture and PhD in Industrial Design and Multimedia Communication, Politecnico di Milano. She is a full professor at the Faculty of Design and Art and teaches Communication / Interaction / Transmedia Design at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Former coordinator of the Theoretical, Historical, Critical Research and Editorial Projects Commission of the ADI Design Index, preselection of the Compasso d’Oro Award (2017-2021), she is on the editorial boards of Progetto Grafico and PAD.
Giampiero Bosoni, full professor of History of Design and Interior Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. He has collaborated with Figini and Pollini, Vittorio Gregotti, and Enzo Mari, with whom he developed an interest in the theory and history of architectural and design projects. He has authored and edited approximately twenty books and published over three hundred articles. Commissioned by the MoMA in New York, he produced the volume Italian Design (2009), dedicated to the Italian section of their collection. He served as President of AIS/Design (2018-2021) and as editor-in-chief of AIS/Design Journal: Storia e ricerche (with E. Dellapiana and J. Schnapp).
Marinella Ferrara, PhD in Design, is Associate Professor at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano and a faculty member of its PhD Program in Design. She teaches History of Design and Technology and Product Design Lab at the School of Design. Since 2015, she has led MADEC (Material Design Culture), a research group investigating the relationship between design and materials in both historical and contemporary contexts, with particular attention to gender perspectives and North-South dynamics. Former Associate Editor of AIS/Design. Storia e Ricerche (2019-2021), she has served as Editor-in-Chief of the online scientific journal PAD. Pages on Arts and Design (padjournal.net) since 2011 and is a member of the ADI Permanent Design Observatory. Her key publications include Materiali e innovazioni nel design (Gangemi, 2004), Materials that Change Colour(Springer, 2014), Ideas and the Matter (ListLab, 2017), and Materials that Move (Springer, 2018).
Francesco E. Guida, MSc in Architecture and PhD in Design and Technology for the Enhancement of Cultural Heritage. He is an associate professor at the Department of Design and teaches Communication Design at the School of Design at Politecnico di Milano. He is currently the scientific coordinator of the Documentation Centre on Graphic Design of AIAP. Former associate editor of the journal AIS/Design. Storia e Ricerche (2019-2021), he is on PAD. Pages on Arts and Design editorial board.
Chiara Lecce, PhD, associate professor in Interior Architecture and Exhibition Design at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano. Since 2022, she has been on the steering committee of AIS/Design and the scientific secretary of the Master’s Degree in Interior and Spatial Design at the School of Design, Politecnico di Milano. Author of several essays and articles, most notably the book The Smart Home. An exploration of how Media Technologies have influenced Interior Design visions from the last century till today (FrancoAngeli, 2020). She is the managing editor (since 2013) of the scientific journal PAD Pages on Arts and Design and member of its Editorial Board. In 2021, she co-founded Cratèra Edizioni.
